¿Qué son los números ordinales?

Los números ordinales (ordinal numbers, en inglés) sirven para establecer un orden. Además se usan en inglés para expresar la fecha.

Escritura de los números ordinales

Los números ordinales se forman a partir de los cardinales añadiendo th al final:

Ejemplo:
four – fourth
eleven – eleventh

Excepciones

  • one – first
  • two – second
  • three – third
  • five – fifth
  • eight – eighth
  • nine – ninth
  • twelve – twelfth

En los números de más de un dígito solo se transforma la última cifra:

Ejemplo:
421st = four hundred and twenty-first
5,011th = five thousand and eleventh

Escritura en cifras

Para escribir los números ordinales en cifras hay que añadir las dos últimas letras del número escrito al número.

  • first = 1st
  • second = 2nd
  • third = 3rd
  • fourth = 4th
  • twenty-sixth = 26th
  • a/one hundred and first = 101st

Uso

Fecha: en inglés se usan los números ordinales para expresar la fecha.

Ejemplo:
Today is the eleventh of June.Hoy es 11 de junio.
The concert is on the the seventeenth of January.El concierto es el 27 de enero.

Orden y listas: los números ordinales permiten otorgar un orden a los elementos de una lista o de una enumeración.

Ejemplo:
We live on the fifteenth floor.Vivimos en la decimoquinta planta.
First, wash the rice. Second, put it in a saucepan. Third, add water. Fourth, cook for 10 minutes.Primero, lava el arroz. Segundo, pon el arroz en una olla. Tercero, añade agua. Cuarto, cuece durante diez minutos.

Títulos nobiliarios: los números ordinales se escriben en números romanos cuando se refieren a un título. En inglés oral se añade el artículo definido the antes del número ordinal y este se escribe entonces con mayúscula:
