Diferencias entre leave y let

¿En qué se diferenciar let y leave en inglés?

Los verbos let y leave tienen significados aparentemente cercanos y ambos se traducen en español como «dejar». Pero no significan lo mismo.

El verbo letdejar, permitir significa:

permitir a alguien hacer algo;

Ejemplo:

They only let the children eat sweets on the weekend.Solo dejan a los niños comer chucherías los fines de semana.

My boss let me go hom early yesterday.Mi jefe me dejó marcharme pronto ayer.
permitir que algo ocurre no interponiéndose o no haciendo nada para evitarlo;

Ejemplo:

I was watching TV and I let the cake burn in the oven.Estaba viendo la televisión y dejé que el bizcocho se quemara en el horno.

You should let your beard grow, it would look really cool.Deberías dejarte crecer la barba, te quedaría muy bien.

I just let him shout until he was finished.Le dejé gritar hasta que hubiera terminado.
también se usa seguido en la fórmula let's + infinitivo para hacer sugerencias o propuestas.

Ejemplo:

Let's go to the beach after work.Vamos a la playa después de comer.

El verbo leavedejar, abandonar significa:

Ejemplo:: Leave the door open, it’s very warm in here.Deja la puerta abierta, hace mucho calor aquí dentro.; I think you should leave the Christmas tree the way it is, it already looks great.

salir o abandonar un lugar;

Ejemplo:

I left work at 5 o’clock.Salgo de trabajar a las 5.

He left home when he was 16.Se fue de casa cuando tenía 16 años.
También forma el phrasal verb leave sb/sth out, que significa excluir a alguien o algo.

Ejemplo:: Tell me the whole story and don’t leave anything out.Cuéntame toda la historia y no te dejes nada.; The other children often leave him out at school, so he feels a bit lonely.Los otros niños no le hacen caso en el colegio, así que se siente un poco solo.
