Le forme del passato

Introduzione

In inglese esistono più modi per esprimere il passato. Purtroppo non possiamo scegliere le forme del passato liberamente. Secondo le situazioni bisogna impiegare forme ben precise.

Esempio

When I came home last Monday, I had a message on my answering machine. It said, “Meet me in the park.” I didn’t know who the message was from, but I was curious.

The sun was shining. So after I’d checked all the messages on my answering machine, I put on my jacket, took my bag and went to the park. And there he was: Luke, an old friend from school. I hadn’t seen him for ages.

Now he was standing there smiling at me. He was holding a flower that he’d bought in a nearby flowershop.

I was glad to see him. He looked relieved, as he’d already been standing there for a few hours.

Simple Past	forma semplice per il racconto di eventi passati (azioni che si susseguono) Esempio: When I came home last Monday, I had a message on my answering machine.Quando lunedì scorso tornai a casa, trovai un messaggio nella segreteria telefonica. It said, “Meet me in the park.”Il messaggio diceva: "Incontriamoci al parco.“ I didn’t know who the message was from, but I was curious.Non sapevo di chi fosse il messaggio ma ero curioso. I put on my jacket, took my bag and went to the park.Mi misi il giubotto, presi la borsa e andai al parco. Past Progressive	sottolinea lo svolgimento di un'azione Esempio: The sun was shining.Il sole splendeva. He was standing there smiling at me.Era lì in piedi che mi sorrideva. He was holding a flower.Aveva un fiore (in mano).
Past Perfect Simple	azioni che si svolgono prima di un'altra azione (già menzionata prima) Esempio: After I had checked all the messages on my answering machine, I put on my jacket …Dopo che ebbi controllato tutti i messaggi nella mia segreteria telefonica, mi misi la giacca.... I hadn’t seen him for ages.Non lo vedevo da anni. He was holding a flower that he had bought in a nearby flowershop. Aveva un fiore in mano che aveva comprato dal fiorario lì vicino.
Past Perfect Progressive	sottolinea la durata di un'azione che si è svolta fino ad un determinato momento nel passato Esempio: He looked relieved, as he had already been waiting there for a few hours.Sembrò sollevato perchè stava aspettando lì già da ore.
