Reported Speech (Indirect Speech)

Introduzione

Esempio:
He says/said …
She explains/explained …
She tells/told me …
He asks/asked …

Esempio

Mandy is sitting in the café where James works. He tells her, “I work in this café almost every day. But yesterday I saw a famous TV presenter here for the first time. She was eating an ice-cream at the table where you are sitting now”. Bild 1
Bild 2 A week later, Mandy is speaking to a friend on the phone: “I saw James at the café last week. He said that he worked in that café almost every day, but that the day before he had seen a famous TV presenter there for the first time. She had been eating an ice-cream at the table where I was sitting at that moment”.

      Esempio:
He said, “I saw a famous TV presenter.”Lui disse: ''Ho visto una famosa presentatrice televisiva'.'
He said (that) he had seen a famous TV presenter.
      Esempio:
He said, “I saw a famous TV presenter here yesterday”.Lui disse: ''Ieri ho visto qui una famosa presentatrice televisiva''.
He said (that) he had seen a famous TV presenter there the day before.
      Esempio:
He said, “She was eating an ice-cream at the table where you are sitting”.
He said (that) she had been eating an ice-cream at the table where I was sitting.

Esempio:
He said, “I work every day.”
He said that he worked every day.Lui disse: ''Lavoro tutti i giorni.''
Lui disse di lavorare tutti i giorni.“
He said, “I saw a TV presenter.”
He said that he had seen a TV presenter.
He said, “She was sitting where you are sitting.”
He said that she had been sitting where I was sitting.Lui disse: ''Lei era seduta dove sei seduta tu.''
Lui disse che lei sedette dove ero seduta io.

Future I (going to) was / were going to
Future I (will) Conditional I (would)
Conditional I (would)

I verbi could, should, would, might, must, needn’t, ought to, used to di regola non subiscono modifiche.

Esempio:
He said, “I could have asked her for an autograph.” – He said that he could have asked her for an autograph.

Esempio:
He says, “I saw a TV presenter.”
He says that he saw a TV presenter.

Esempio:
He says, “I work every day.”
He says that he works every day.Lui dice: ''Lavoro tutti i giorni.''
Lui dice di lavorare tutti i giorni.
He says, “She was sitting where you are sitting.”
He says that she was sitting where I am sitting.Lui dice: ''Lei era seduta dove sei seduta tu.''

      Esempio:
She asked him, "How often do you work?"
→ She asked him how often he worked.Lei gli chiese “Quante volte/Quanti giorni lavori?”
→ Lei gli chiese quante volte/quanti giorni lavorasse.
He asked me, "Do you know any famous people?"
→ He asked me if/whether I knew any famous people.
      Esempio:
I asked him, “Have you met any famous people before?”
→ I asked him if he had met any famous people before.
      Esempio:
I asked him, “What do you want to tell me?”
→ I asked him what he wanted to tell me.Gli chiesi “Cosa vuoi dirmi?”
→ Gli chiesi cosa volesse dirmi.
    • Quando nell’interrogativa non troviamo un soggetto (nel senso che al posto del soggetto troviamo who/what), il verbo segue direttamente who oppure what.
      Esempio:
I asked him, “Who is sitting here?”
→ I asked him who was sitting there.Gli chiesi “Chi è seduto lì?”
→ Gli chiesi chi fosse seduto lì.

Nota

Esempio:
Where is the train station?
→ Could you tell me where the train station is?Dov’è la stazione? → Potrebbe dirmi dove si trova la stazione?
Can you help me?
→ I wonder if you can help me.Puoi aiutarmi? → Mi chiedo se puoi aiutarmi.

Esortazione/richiesta

Esempio:
He said, “Watch the TV presenter’s show tonight.”
He told me to watch the TV presenter’s show that evening.

Esempio:
He said, “Don’t watch the TV presenter’s show tonight.”
He told me not to watch the TV presenter’s show that evening.

Locuzioni con who/what/how e infinito

Quando il discorso indiretto indica che qualcosa dovrebbe o potrebbe essere fatta, possiamo omettere il soggetto ed il verbo modale facendo seguire ai pronomi interrrogativi who/what/where/how direttamente l’infinito.

Esempio:
Just tell me when I should stop.
→ Just tell me when to stop.Dimmi semplicemente quando (devo) fermarmi.
She doesn’t know what she should do.
→ She doesn’t know what to do.Lei non sa cosa fare.
I asked him how I could get to the post office.
→ I asked him how to get to the post office.Gli chiesi come arrivare all’ufficio postale.
